Audience meters automatically register whenever a TV or radio is switched on or off, as well as each change of channel, and each time recorded content is played on the decoder, or catch-up / preview services are viewed. They also allow for individual audience measurement via a remote control with push buttons; each member of the household has their own button which they use to state their presence in the room. The audience meter is connected via the telephone network to a computer that collects and processes the data gathered. The sample can be questioned continuously: - either: each individual in the panel is asked to fill in a daily questionnaire relating to the subject of the study. This is the case for the Radio panel. - or the information is recorded and returned regularly. This is the case for the Médiamat panel. EAR is a continuous survey survey A statistical method that aims to produce information about a population by interviewing part of the population (sample). This word is generally used to mean a survey conducted on a sample that have been interviewed using a questionnaire or else systematically observed. The Basics of Radio Audience Measurement

What is Médiamétrie's EAR study?

The EAR study study Any research done across a population, line of business, or products (programme content, programme schedules, etc.) A study relies most often on the data coming out of a survey (or surveys). Find out more (Étude Audience Audience The set of listeners, viewers, or TV viewers in which each individual is equally weighted, regardless of their listening/viewing duration or frequency of contact. The study delivers reliable data data Digital data Find out more on radio audiences, station performance, and listening habits. It measures audience levels on an average day average day Data relating to an average day correspond to the arithmetic mean of the corresponding data over the different days of the week, with this average being calculated over all of the weeks in the period studied. Who Uses EAR Data?

The EAR study provides essential insights for radio broadcasters, advertisers, media agencies and advertising agencies.

Its results support strategic decision-making by helping market players:

The EAR Methodology: A Two-Pronged Approach

To accurately capture today's listening habits and keep pace with the digital transformation of audio consumption, EAR combines two complementary measurement methods.

1. Continuous Telephone Surveys

The first pillar of the study is a large-scale telephone survey survey A statistical method that aims to produce information about a population by interviewing part of the population (sample). This word is generally used to mean a survey conducted on a sample that have been interviewed using a questionnaire or else systematically observed. Find out more conducted every day throughout the year.

From Médiamétrie's call centre in Amiens, around 100 trained interviewers conduct interviews with approximately 350 individuals aged 13 and over each day. Respondents are asked about their radio listening activity on the previous day.

This continuous fieldwork results in approximately 100,000 interviews every year, providing a robust and reliable foundation for audience measurement.

2. Automatic Measurement Through an Audience Panel Panel A sample from which information is collected over time. It can be questioned several times at regular intervals. This method is pertinent for studying changes in behaviour. The sample can be questioned continuously: - either: each individual in the panel is asked to fill in a daily questionnaire relating to the subject of the study. This is the case for the Radio panel. - or the information is recorded and returned regularly. This is the case for the Médiamat panel. This method is pertinent for understanding behavioural patterns and their changes if the panel lasts long enough. Find out more

The second component relies on a panel of approximately 6,000 individuals aged 13 and over.

Panel members carry a portable audience measurement device known as Rate On Air. The device operates automatically by detecting inaudible audio codes embedded in radio broadcasts.

Throughout the day, the system identifies and records the radio stations received and listened to by each participant, providing detailed and objective measurement data.

Key Audience Indicators Produced by EAR

By combining survey-based and passive measurement techniques, Médiamétrie produces a range of benchmark indicators used by the radio and advertising industries.

Through Telephone Surveys

The survey component generates the key daily audience metrics, including:

Results are published at different geographic levels through:

  • EAR National
  • EAR Local
  • EAR Île-de-France

Through Automated Measurement (EAR Insights)

The automated component, known as EAR Insights, provides a deeper understanding of audience reach reach Reach is the term used to describe the reach achieved by a medium, publication, advertisement or campaign. It corresponds to the number of users reached and is therefore quantitative data. Reach plays a key role in measuring return on investment. It is used to determine whether or not the communication is effective. Whether for a website or a social network, reach corresponds to the proportion of the Internet user population or the audience reached by the site or network over a set period. Find out more and listener loyalty.

Its reports analyse listening behaviour over longer periods, including weekly and monthly timeframes, both at the national level and within the Île-de-France region region Geographic division. Mainland France is organised into 13 administrative regions (INSEE regions - there were previously 22 regions). Find out more .

An Industry-Governed and Independently Audited Measurement System

To ensure that the methodology continues to reflect market realities and evolving listening habits, a dedicated Radio Committee regularly brings together key industry stakeholders. The committee contributes to the ongoing development and improvement of the study.

In addition, the Centre d'Étude des Supports de Publicité (CESP) independently audits and certifies the quality of the measurement system through regular reviews.

This governance framework guarantees transparency, methodological rigour and reliability, enabling Médiamétrie's clients to make informed business decisions with confidence.
