What is OPRO's role in Audience Measurement?

OPRO’s primary role is to transform technical events, known as Audience Measurement Audience Measurement Quantitative study of the frequency of use of media. Find out more Events, into audience audience The set of listeners, viewers, or TV viewers in which each individual is equally weighted, regardless of their listening/viewing duration or frequency of contact. Find out more information that can be used by production and reporting systems.

It first analyses the events collected by Audience Meters, their sensors and associated devices. These events describe received signals, equipment status and a range of technical indicators, including TV power power Indicator for evaluating formats in the context of a media plan. This is the prioritisation of formats according to their target audience. Find out more status, Beacon Beacon A small device which emits a periodic signal to detect the presence of the panellist in their home or car. In this case, the beacon signal is detected by their personal portable audiometer. Find out more detections and battery levels.

OPRO also processes events related to panellist activity. These may include declarations and de-declarations made through the TVM3 Audience Meter Audience Meter A device for measuring the audience of radio or television programmes. Audience meters automatically register whenever a TV or radio is switched on or off, as well as each change of channel, and each time recorded content is played on the decoder, or catch-up / preview services are viewed. They also allow for individual audience measurement via a remote control with push buttons; each member of the household has their own button which they use to state their presence in the room. The audience meter is connected via the telephone network to a computer that collects and processes the data gathered. Find out more remote control control All the operations implemented to verify the quality of information gathering: the work of the interviewers, the participation of the interviewees, progress against objectives, etc. Find out more , movements detected by wearable devices such as RateOnAir, or user actions such as disconnecting a device.

By combining and interpreting these signals, OPRO identifies panellists' exposure to measured audiovisual content and services before converting this information into Audience Cards.

How does OPRO process raw event data?

To transform technical events into meaningful audience audience The set of listeners, viewers, or TV viewers in which each individual is equally weighted, regardless of their listening/viewing duration or frequency of contact. Find out more information, OPRO relies on several reference databases.

The Audience Panel Panel A sample from which information is collected over time. It can be questioned several times at regular intervals. This method is pertinent for studying changes in behaviour. The sample can be questioned continuously: - either: each individual in the panel is asked to fill in a daily questionnaire relating to the subject of the study. This is the case for the Radio panel. - or the information is recorded and returned regularly. This is the case for the Médiamat panel. This method is pertinent for understanding behavioural patterns and their changes if the panel lasts long enough. Find out more Repository (RPA) describes the composition of panel households and individuals. The CSO repository (Operator Signature Signature An electronic code inserted into a digital or analogue signal, making it possible to authenticate the transmitting source. Find out more Verification) maps technical signatures generated through watermarking watermarking The technology used in television and radio audience measurement. Watermarking consists of inserting an (audio) tag into broadcasts that is inaudible to the human ear. This tag identifies the channel airing the programme, as well as regular markers of the broadcast time. Audience meters installed in panellist homes detect these signals. Find out more technologies to television and radio channels.

The Catch-Up Catch-Up Catch-up technology allows TV viewers to watch or rewatch a television programme after it has been broadcast live. Find out more Repository (RCA) links measurement events to programmes and content, particularly in non-linear viewing environments.

Together, these repositories provide the contextual information required to convert technical signals into actionable audience data data Digital data Find out more .

Without these reference systems, collected events would not be sufficient to accurately identify an exposure or associate it with an individual, a household household In the statistical sense of the term, a household refers to all occupants of the same dwelling, whether they are related or not. A household may be composed of a single person. Household populations therefore effectively exclude some communities (workers' hostels, retirement homes, university residences, prisons, etc.), the homeless, seamen and people living in mobile homes. Find out more , a device, a channel channel A subset of the brand URLs that overlap with a single theme (e.g., news, e-mail, etc.); the channel audience contributes to the overall audience of the brand, which itself contributes to the overall audience of the Parent. How are the rules organized?

OPRO applies a series of workflow-based rules designed to validate, filter filter A question allowing the selection of a subpopulation that is subject to a specific part of the questionnaire. Find out more , interpret and enrich collected events according to the context of each panellist, household household In the statistical sense of the term, a household refers to all occupants of the same dwelling, whether they are related or not. Some rules and processing processing Means any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data or on sets of personal data, whether or not by automated means, such as collection, recording, organisation, structuring, storage, adaptation or alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, alignment or combination, restriction, erasure or destruction Find out more behaviours can be configured outside the application itself through reference databases and configuration files. This flexibility allows the system to adapt to different audience measurement audience measurement Quantitative study of the frequency of use of media. Find out more environments, both in France and internationally.

Technical rules: ensuring signal reliability

The first stage of processing is governed by technical rules that ensure collected events are complete, consistent and suitable for further analysis.

OPRO verifies event integrity and validates the consistency of the information received. Timestamps originating from multiple sources are reconciled to establish a reliable and coherent timeline.

The system then qualifies signals by matching audio signatures with channels or content using ACR technologies. It also handles detection ambiguities, including partial, intermittent or uncertain signals.

Finally, OPRO consolidates events over time. Individual detections are grouped into coherent viewing sequences, short interruptions are smoothed out, and detections are stabilised to create a continuous consumption record suitable for audience audience The set of listeners, viewers, or TV viewers in which each individual is equally weighted, regardless of their listening/viewing duration or frequency of contact. Business Rules: Audience Interpretation

After technical validation, OPRO applies business rules to transform the qualified signals into actionable Audience Cards.

These rules are used in particular to validate the presence of individuals. OPRO distinguishes between device activity and panellist activity based on observable interactions, such as remote control control All the operations implemented to verify the quality of information gathering: the work of the interviewers, the participation of the interviewees, progress against objectives, etc. Find out more use, movements of a wearable device such as RateOnAir, or other behavioral indicators.

The system also filters out false positives in order to eliminate erroneous exposures, for example, when a signal corresponds to ambient noise or a detection outside the actual listening context.

The business rules take into account the situations specific to the Panel Panel A sample from which information is collected over time. Find out more , such as households on vacation, absent individuals, unconnected devices, or mobility scenarios. Multi-device and multi-screen environments are also handled with tailored processing.

The workflows apply these rules to each entityindividual, Household, or device—according to a specific order. OPRO then enriches the technical events with the channel channel A subset of the brand URLs that overlap with a single theme (e.g., news, e-mail, etc.); the channel audience contributes to the overall audience of the brand, which itself contributes to the overall audience of the Parent. Find out more , content, duration, and editorial context information necessary to generate the Audience Card Audience Card Elementary data that can be used to describe an audience. An audience card is comprised of a date, a start time and an end time, and a description of what was viewed or listened to. Depending on the media and the measurement technology, the description of what was viewed or listened to can be a TV channel, a Radio station, a URL, video content, etc. The audience card can also be enriched with additional information, such as the location or even the type of screen. DEP Control Reports and Operational Support

In addition to generating Audience Audience The set of listeners, viewers, or TV viewers in which each individual is equally weighted, regardless of their listening/viewing duration or frequency of contact. Find out more Cards, OPRO provides control control All the operations implemented to verify the quality of information gathering: the work of the interviewers, the participation of the interviewees, progress against objectives, etc. Find out more information designed to verify the validity of the processing processing Means any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data or on sets of personal data, whether or not by automated means, such as collection, recording, organisation, structuring, storage, adaptation or alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, alignment or combination, restriction, erasure or destruction Find out more performed on panel panel A sample from which information is collected over time. This method is pertinent for understanding behavioural patterns and their changes if the panel lasts long enough. Find out more entities. This information takes the form of alerts, respondent statuses, and lists of entities to be verified. It helps identify households, individuals, or stations whose data data Digital data Find out more processing has generated an anomaly, an inconsistency, or a level of suspicion requiring further analysis.

These controls cover several types of situations: technical anomalies related to the operation of Audience Meters or the collection of events; measurement inconsistencies such as the absence of Audience Measurement Audience Measurement Quantitative study of the frequency of use of media. Find out more events, chronological issues, inconsistent Date/Time Stamping Date/Time Stamping An operation consisting of precisely picking out the beginning and ending moments of any programme (or part of a programme) broadcast on television. By extension, the date/time stamping of a programme also consists in describing it by giving information on certain variables (genre it belongs to, national origin, name of the principal actors if a film, etc.). Find out more , or unreferenced identifiers, as well as business-specific controls regarding panellist behavior—for example, abnormally long viewing durations, lack of movement (as in the ROA3 case), or situations where presence needs to be verified.

The generation of these reports serves as an important operational tool. Entities flagged as errors or under alert can be isolated to perform targeted controls after processing: verifying a household household In the statistical sense of the term, a household refers to all occupants of the same dwelling, whether they are related or not. A household may be composed of a single person. Household populations therefore effectively exclude some communities (workers' hostels, retirement homes, university residences, prisons, etc.), the homeless, seamen and people living in mobile homes. Find out more that has become non-responsive, analyzing a device for which data collection is deemed insufficient, or following up with a panellist when consumption behavior appears an outlier outlier In statistics, this is an atypical or aberrational data point that deviates from the model which holds for most of the data, i.e., it differs greatly from the "normal" values measured. Excluding outliers can make average estimates more significant. Find out more

OPRO does not merely produce a qualified audience, but also provides the necessary information to understand why certain entities are considered valid, suspicious, or in error error There are different types of errors in surveys : coverage error (the sampling base does not correspond exactly to the population studied), non-response error (a part of the sample does not wish to answer certain questions), measurement error (the value declared by the individual is incorrect) and sampling error (only a part of the population is observed). The combination of these errors - the total error - is the difference between the survey-estimated value and the (generally unknown) “true value” of the parameter in the population. Find out more .
