With an ever-expanding range of video content available each year—whether free (television, online video) or paid, thanks to the rise of SVoD platforms—the video viewing habits of the French are changing rapidly. By 2025, 60% of households will subscribe to at least one Pay TV Offer (SVoD and pay-TV channels), an increase of 8 percentage points compared to 2021.

At the same time, the adoption of connected multi-screen devices for accessing this diverse range of content continues to grow. “On-demand” video is becoming a staple in the daily lives of video viewers

While the vast majority (61%) of the time French people spend each day watching video content is devoted to live television*, choosing which program to watch and when—on-demand—is now becoming the norm in daily viewing habits.

By 2025, “on-demand” video—on TV network platforms (BVoD), SVoD, and social media (online video)— will account for 39% of the time French people spend watching video each day, compared to 36% a year ago. 
“On-demand” viewing is growing particularly fast among 35- to 49-year-olds, where time spent on this practice has increased by 17% over two years, and among those over 50 (+21%).

When it comes to this type of video consumption, viewers say they appreciate having a choice. In fact, by 2025, the content offering available on SVoD platforms had increased by 31% over three years, while that of TV networks’ BVoD platforms had doubled in one year.

Finally, fiction remains the main driver of this behavior: 98% of the titles in the 2025 SVoD Top 50 are fiction, this genre accounts for 74% of content consumption time for Previews on TV channels and 44% for Catch-up Catch-up Catch-up technology allows TV viewers to watch or rewatch a television programme after it has been broadcast live.
