With the Global Audio study, Médiamétrie provides a consolidated and accurate overview of audio consumption in France. Global Audio analyses all audio usage by Internet users.

Over 82% of French people listen to audio content every day

Audio is a must-have format: more than 9 out of 10 French people (95.1%) listen to audio content at least once a month; more than 8 out of 10 (82.3%) of them even listen to it every day.

The appetite of the French for audio content can be observed throughout the day, with a predominance in the morning: 42% of the total listening volume of the day is in the morning (before 12 pm), 32% between 12 pm and 6 pm and 26% at the end of the day, after 6 pm.

Audio content also accompanies the French on their travels: 37% of audio listening volume takes place outside the home, mainly in the car.

Radio represents more than half of the audio listening volume

Radio retains its leadership: on average, it accounts for 57% of the total volume of audio consumption each day, including 53% live and 4% on demand. It remains the most listened to format ahead of music streaming, audio (20%) or background video (10%).

Digital audio content continues to grow, driven notably by podcasts

Audio hasn’t escaped the digitalisation of uses Today, nearly half of audio consumption is done via the Internet (48%), mainly on mobile phones.

More than 3 out of 4 internet users listen to digital audio content every month (76.3%); that's 5.3 points more than 2 years ago.

While all digital audio formats have increased in recent years, podcasts have seen the most marked growth; 36.1% of Internet users reported listening to at least one podcast per month in 2022, i.e. 17.6 million listeners. This represents a gain of 2.6 million regular users compared to 2021. This growth is in line with that observed between 2020 and 2021.
